This memorial monument in honour of the soldiers killed in the First World War is embellished by a majestic bronze statue representing the Vittoria Alata, an elegant goddess of victory built in 1929 by the Parmesan sculptor Renato Brozzi, one of the most important artist of Art Deco. It resembles the famous Nike of Samothracia, and is an evidence of the relation which Casarano had with many important men of that period. It seems in fact that Brozzi agreed to build the statue thanks to the intercession of Pompeo Nuccio (1876-1932), an established lawyer from Casarano.
On 14th August 1943 an English aircraft bombed the square, maybe because the pilot took two mortars next to the monument (one of them still on the place) for anti-aircraft guns. 6 people were killed and 27 Were seriously injured.
