This church, consecrated in 1760, replaced an older church dated back to the 16th century and dedicated to the Annunziata.. The new church was then built thanks to the money collected by the ‘Congregazione dell’Immacolata’
The crypt called ‘Grotta del Crocefisso’ (or ‘Grotta di Santa Costantina’) together with the remains of a convent which used to be next to it belong to Ruffano. Fossils and furnishings dated back to the Neolithic have been discovered here.
The First Mother Church or Church San Giovanni Elemosiniere
The origin of the Mother Church of Casarano goes back to the years before the 16th century. In this long period it has had different seats. Father Antonio Chetry identifies three phases in its history and talks about a ‘First Mother Church’ a ‘Second Mother Church’ and a ‘Third Mother Church’.
